Hello Hound Handlers!

Happy Valentine's Day to all!

We would like to welcome three new adopters, their families and their "Greys" to the group:

Raymond & Paula Harter adopted Derby, a handsome black/brindle. They are keeping the name as they feel it's appropriate.

Bill & Jamie Villamor adopted Brie who is now called Tabitha because of her cute little nose twitch.

Lawan & Andy Jackson, Colin & Devi, adopted Feta who is now called Olive after the story "Olive, The Other Reindeer" because she looks like a little deer.

Thank you all for giving a retired racing Greyhound a "forever home." Also, thank you Pat and Carol, for flying them up on such short notice. You are wonderful.

We have a HUGE Show & Tell coming up Feb. 15th, 16th and 17th. It's the Home and Garden Show at the San Mateo Expo Center. Our booth is number 346 and it is located along the back wall of the Expo Center by the door and restrooms. This is our first three day event and we need all of you who are in the area to help. Remember, a Show & Tell is where you get to come and brag about your Greys along with informing people about how wonderful they are as pets. Most people have never seen a Greyhound and are fascinated by them. It is tons of fun. Also, it's a "greyt" opportunity to get together and compare notes. The shifts are three hours. Friday, the hours are 12 - 9 PM. Saturday, 10 - 7. Sunday, 10 - 6. Please let us know if you can help and what hours. If you can only help for one hour, that's fine. Just send me an e-mail and I'll put you on the schedule. Because we only have a 10 by 10 foot booth, we'd like to spread you out. Otherwise, it could get too crowded.

We have also set up several Show & Tells beginning in April. They will be
posted on the web site soon.

For all those who are planning on going to the GPA picnic on May 4th in
Huntington Beach, don't forget to make your reservations. If you need any information, feel free to contact me (Ann). The GPA/OC group is very excited that so many of you are coming. The fosters are looking forward to meeting you and seeing their "babies" again. This is a fun and wonderful event.

With Valentine's day coming, the best way to keep your hound healthy is by locking up "your" treats. As tempting as it may be to share, many "people- treats" will upset your Greys stomach. Chocolate is extremely harmful to dogs. All pet supply stores carry a wide variety of treats that are safe to give your four legged Valentine. Also, we know they are notorious "counter surfers." We are babysitting Winston for a few days. The other day, he stole a whole jar of peanut butter (plastic) off the counter that Scott was using. Anything is fair game to them.

A few Grey owners have mentioned they have a "pond-puppy." Digging can be a problem this time of year with all the rain we've experienced. One solution from "Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies" is to give him/her a "digging pit." Pick a place more suitable for you, hide neat treats and toys just under the surface and cover with a loose material like leaves, pine bark, sand, etc. They will love the treasure hunt. For people who work and cannot supervise outdoor play, you may find this an easier solution than sacrificing your landscape, inside floor and sanity. Another solution is to put their "poop" in the whole where they have been digging. Unfortunately, this seems to only encourage them to move to another spot.

We have another celebrity amongst us. Jubilee, Bruce and Dana Chandler's little girl, will be on the "Price is Right" February 6th at 10am. Bob Barker is an animal advocate and frequently features rescued and animals in need. Phoebe and Farrah, Eugene Lukehart's babies were featured last year.

The "Greyhound Only Obedience Class" is coming along. In one class, Joanne was teaching us how to teach our Greys to sit. When she said "sit" to her Victoria, the "demo-dog", at least four of the Greyhounds sat. It was a fun moment, not to mention a complete surprise to their owners.

Jack Fishbaugh, Dick & Delene Dunne, and Scott & Ann Sanders, the original Board of GACA, would like to announce that we have four new Board members. Jamal & Cecelia Abed and Jim & Carolyn Shofstahl have joined us. We are very excited to welcome them. They have lots of "greyt" ideas to help us become an even better rescue group.

Saving the best for last, we are now, officially a sub-chapter of the Greyhound Pets of America/California, Orange County and Greater Los Angeles Chapter. Our new official name is Greyhound Pets of America, Northern California / Greyhound Adoption California. We will continue to use Greyhound Adoption California for the web site and for local events and advertising. This is very exciting as GPA is a national organization with national exposure. As a sub-chapter and eventually a whole chapter, we will benefit from this exposure. An example, we have been invited to set up a booth at the NASCAR event the beginning of June. GPA/OC has been wonderful and is helping us get started and this will enable us to work even more closely with them. I'd like to thank Joyce McRorie for her wonderful support and guidance. She has been a terrific mentor. Her whole organization has been wonderful in their support.

Have a "GREYT" and wonderful February.
