Hello Greyhound Friends!
First of all, Scott and Ann would like to thank all of you for your
outpouring of sympathy and support when they lost their dear Forgie.
He was a special boy and did so much to advance the cause of rescuing
retired racing Greyhounds by showing all who met him how magnificent
these animals are. He was a gentleman and a gentle dog and is very greatly
missed by all who knew and loved him.
March was quite a month for us as far as
adoptions go. We placed 12 dogs in
new "forever homes."
Dan & Sarenna Deeble of Sacramento
welcomed Bondo, a real Velcro
dog.
Paul & Patricia Paladini
of Castro Valley adopted Hank, the blackest
brindle we've ever seen.
Jessica & Jack Senakarn of
Hayward adopted Dexter, another member of
the "Black Pack."
Jennifer & John Morales of
Milpitas adopted Gus, who has a taste for
Hershey's Kisses, wrappers and all.
Robert & Jodi Cardenas of
Hollister adopted Louis, who didn't run
away when their 4 year old let him out with the front door open. Way
to go Louis!
Sally Daine of Los Altos who
adopted Stanley. Stanley has a taste
for croissants and butter and anything else left out on the counter.
Definitely passed "Counter Surfing 101."
Heather & Kevin Grossman
of Modesto adopted Etta, now Gracie. What
can we say about little Etta except see the story below.
Donna Rose of Vacaville who adopted
Bailey, a beautiful "Big Red."
Kim Conrad & Matt Lyons of
Salinas who adopted Smooch, another
"Black Pack" member and a real sweetheart.
Gary Hermansen & Mary Gates and daughter Leigh of Los Altos who
adopted Kaliegh, a very unusual and beautiful, almost orange, red brindle.
Cathy Bottarini & Ken Madden
of San Bruno adopted Matti, another
"Black Pack" member who is very petite and very well-behaved
according to "Mom."
Ana Solomon & Joan Joosten of San Leandro adopted
Amante, a stately
red big boy.
Add to this list, number 13, Sprocket. A 17 month old banana brindle
male
adopted by Ann & Scott Sanders. He was adopted directly from GPA/OC
and Ann & Scott would like to thank everyone down there, especially
Joyce and Tom, for picking him out for them. He is full of life and
they call him their "heart healer."
As for Miss Etta James. Etta stayed with Jack & Dede
Fishbaugh for a few
days until her adopters were ready. Jack filed the following story on
Etta's first
night with them.
"Etta is the only dog I've ever known with
an absolute ceiling fan fetish. You told me Sherrlyn (her foster
Mom), but I had to see it to believe it. When bad things happen
in the house, such as a rattled newspaper or a dropped spoon, Etta
will run under the fan, challenge it and frequently bark. I know
she read Don Quixote in another life !!! I awakened this morning
at 6:15, both Etta and Greta were sound asleep......and the Sunday
paper was due to hit the porch at 6:30. The time came, the paper
arrived, and Etta hit her feet runningfor the fan. All hell broke
loose....and I'm sure Greta was thinking 'Dawg, WHAT ARE YOU DOING
!!??!!' I've never seen anything funnier."Since arriving at
her "forever home" she has been doing just fine. Survived
the installation of the dog door. Didn't freak until her new "Mother"
pulled out a Kleenex from the box. Gracie (Etta) is definitely going
to be fun to live with.
The following was sent out by Leslie Carr of GPA/OC.
Thank you Leslie. Thought you would all enjoy and identify with this.
On the first day, God created the Greyhound.
On the second day, God created man to serve the
Greyhound.
On the third day, God created the animals of the
Earth to serve as potential food for the Greyhound.
On the fourth day, God created honest toil so
that man could labor for the good of the Greyhound.
On the fifth day, God created the tennis ball
so that the Greyhound could or could not retrieve it.
On the sixth day, God created veterinary science
to keep the Greyhound healthy and the man broke. (AMEN!!!)
On the seventh day, God tried to rest, but he
had to walk the Greyhound..
On the eighth day, God believeth that He was done,
but Lo! The Garden of Eden was full of Greyhound poop and craters.
Adam & Eve, having been banished from the garden, no longer
dwelleth therein to serve the Greyhound, so it came to pass that
He had to clean the mess up Himself. And God was displeased.
On the ninth day, God sayeth unto the Heavens,
"Who hath dominion here, me or the Greyhound?
On the tenth day, God came upon the Greyhound
cockroached on His throne and abideth there unmoving, despite all
His beseeching.
And so it came to pass that God had his answer.
He then sayeth unto Moses, "Fine! You're in charge now. Here's
my ten commandments. You deal with the Greyhound! I'm retiring to
Miami Beach!
And Moses convinced the Pharaoh to let the Israelites
go out of bondage in Egypt and journey to the Promised Land. God
sayeth unto Moses, "The Promised Land shall be yours, but you
must take the Greyhound with you.
And so it came to pass that the Israelites wandered
for 40 years in the
wilderness, waiting for the Greyhound to go potty, mark every bush
and sniff every blade of grass in its domain.

it is the first for our Sacramento group. If you are interested in participating,

That same weekend, we have the San Juan Bautista Craft Fair. The hours

shifts.

we are going to be at the Fremont Craft Fair in the downtown Niles District.

if you are interested in participating.
For those of you who are new to the organization, Show & Tells are
great fun. You get to talk to people about your dog and all the reasons
you love your Greyhound and why they are so special. A few guidelines
to be followed. First,
make sure your Grey is clean, both coat and teeth, nails trimmed and
a shinning example of how beautiful they are. You would not be drawn
to a dirty, unkempt dog with bad breath and nasty looking teeth and
nails. This would be counter
productive to the purpose of a Show & Tell. One of the best selling
points of Greyhounds is their lack of body odor and bad breath. Second,
we are not a political organization. We do not condone or condem Greyhound
racing. Our purpose is to find good homes for retired racing Greyhounds.
Try not to be drawn in to a discussion about racing. Our focus is the
Greyhound as a GREYT pet. If any of you have any questions, there will
always be an experienced Show & Tell person there for you to consult
with. It is lots of fun and gives your Grey an opportunity to show off.
Oh, and don't forget the sunscreen and a hat.
May 4th is the
Greyhound Pets of America/Orange County picnic in Huntington Beach.
If you are interested in going and have not yet contacted us, please
contact Ann Sanders at the above. We have to purchase tickets to the
picnic and need to know how many people and dogs are going. For all
of you who have said you are definitely going and have made reservations,
please let Ann know how many are in your party and how many dogs are
going. I need the tally by April 20th. Thank you. For those of you who
haven't made reservations, most of us are staying at the Residence Inn
of Long Beach. The address is 4111 E. Willow St., Long Beach, 90815.
Phone is 562-595-0909. We are planning on getting together Friday night
for a picnic of our own and a trip to Dog Beach. There will be more
than 30 vendors, games, a raffle, an auction, bake sale and adoption
tent. The cost for the picnic is $12 per person if you pre-register,
$14 the day of the picnic. Kids and Greyhounds are free. If you are
going, it is very important to let us know so we can pre-register you
and get the lower rate. The agreement is that we will give them a total
of how many adults are going and Scott & Ann will pay with one check.
You can then reimburse them. For more information on the picnic, go
to www.fastfriends.org.
They have just updated their web site, so it is fun to go through anyway.
Hope lots of you can go as it is THE GREYHOUND SOCIAL EVENT of the summer
Since our Greys are a bit clutsy and accident prone,
we have discovered a few things to help the healing process. You can
keep your Grey from licking it's wounds by putting an old t-shirt on
them. Just cinch it up to keep it snug and it works like a charm. Thank
you Fred & Susan Goessel for the idea. Also, an old vest can be
used as a coat in cold or chilly weather. Thank you Thomas Lancaster
for a GREYT idea.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL!!!
From the current issue of "Celebrating Greyhounds"
Magazine, thought this was a very appropriate quote. "To paraphrase
Forrest Gump, Greyhounds are like a box of chocolates. You don't know
what you're going to get when you pull one out of the box."
Have a wonderful April!
