Hello Fellow Greyhound Lovers!
Well, we can all be very proud of ourselves. All of the Caliente Dogs
were
rescued. On Saturday, May 25th, 32 dogs were brought back from the track
for their official "Retirement Party." No one was left behind.
(See
picture)
A "Retirement Party" is what they
call the processing of the Greys when they come off the track. This
includes de-fleaing and de-ticking, bathing, blood work, rabies and
vaccine
shots, ear
cleaning and cat testing among other things. Of the 32, we brought nine
up
to Northern California to be fostered. For all involved, it was a very
long
and rewarding day.
For our participation in this, the sequence of events
were as follows: On
Friday afternoon, the 24th, Jim Shofstahl and Scott Sanders drove to
LA and
spent the
night so that they would be at Joyce & Tom McRorie's to meet Tom
and all at
4:30 AM on Saturday. Taking the Hinske Hawler, they drove to the Caliente
Track outside
Tijuana, Mexico. This is usually a two hour drive, that took more like
three. At the track there were 14 females and 17 males waiting in the
turn-out areas. While there, one of the race kennel handlers came up
with a
female that was limping, favoring her right rear leg. All 32 dogs were
loaded into the Hinske Hawler, two dogs in each hold, three in each
of the
holds in the corners (they are a little larger than the other holds.
The
gang brought the dogs across the border without incident and arrived
back at
the McRorie "Ranch", where there were 20 or so volunteers
waiting to start
the party. Dick and Delene Dunne had driven down to the McRorie's on
Saturday morning, leaving at 0'dark:30 themselves, to participate in
the
party. About 5:30 PM, Dick and Delene, Jim and Scott left for Northern
California to transfer dogs to their fosters. The first stop was Santa
Nella about 10:30 PM to hand off the first five dogs to their waiting
fosters. Next were
stops in Tracy, Gilroy and Santa Cara, to pass off the rest of the dogs
to
their
fosters. Bedtime was somewhere around 1:00 AM.
We'd like to thank all who are fostering and all who helped
to make this all
happen. The
fosters are Raymond & Paula Harter, Sharon Braun, David & Julie
Valadez,
Sylvia Olson,
and Lorena, Dr. Herman's vet tech, in the Modesto area. Nina & Steve
Denegri, Dick and Delene
Dunne, and Jamal & Cecilia Abed. Rachel Mittler, who took Viper
for the
weekend until Bobbie &
Ken Silveira could get back from Tahoe. It was definitely a team effort.
All was continued the following
weekend, June 1st, when Dr. Robyn Herman spayed/neutered and cleaned
the
teeth of 8 of the nine dogs.
She did 3 females and 5 males all in one day. It was a monumental
undertaking. We will be forever grateful
for what she did for these special dogs. Her level of caring is evident
as
all are doing well.
To all of you who responded to the original e-mail for
help, thank you. The
response was overwhelming. It
definitely warmed our hearts to know how much you all care about these
beautiful animals.
On Sunday, May 26th, we also flew 5 Greyhounds in to free
up five more
foster homes for the group down
south. Pat & Carol arrived around 11:00 AM at the San Jose Jet Center
with
their charges. We are always
so grateful when they fly the "hounds." Thank you Pat &
Carol.
We have nine new adopters this newsletter:
David Schlinkert adopted Cougar. He's putting a sign
in his
front yard that says
"Beware of Cougar." That should cause some talk in Sunnyvale.
Randy & Jennifer Coffey and their three children,
Kristen,
Michael and Daniel adopted
Barry. He's made such an impression that even his "Grandparents"
are
considering adopting
a Greyhound. His new home is in Hollister.
Kathy Koger & Jim Black adopted Zoe (Eleanor Rigby).
Zoe has a
cast on her front leg
that should come off soon so that she can master the dog door. She is
living in Palo Alto.
Cindy & Mische Mayfield, Taryn and Eamonn, adopted
Pippin
Bastian (Day Tripper), a
friendly boy with a friendly name. His new home is in Vacaville.
John & Christine Ritz adopted Treasure (Hey Jude).
A very sweet
little banana brindle
girl to be a friend to Simba, the Sheltie. She is living in San Jose.
Constance & Robert Oakes and daughter, Lenora, adopted
Plymouth.
Plymouth came up
with the Nor Cal Nine and was ready to go the day after his surgery.
A very
handsome gentleman who
is living in Vacaville too.
William & Debra McRea, April and Alex adopted Chevy,
another Nor
Cal Nine boy who was
also ready to go immediately. He is living in Modesto.
Jill & Patrick Mazzei have adopted Je'Taime as a companion to Fiona.
Congratulations for flunking Fostering 101.
Sherrlyn & Tom Lancaster, Thomas, Nick and Michael,
adopted
Grommet (Liam), a brother for Cali.
Grommet and his new family live in San Jose.
Nina & Steve Denegri adopted Nikki (Solara). They
have set a
new record for flunking Fostering 101, 12
hours. They knew immediately that Nikki was for them and Sasha is enjoying
her new "sister." Sasha still
gets first rights to the bed though.
A big THANK YOU to all of you for giving these Greys a
wonderful "forever
home."
We are planning our first "annual" Greyhound
Adoption California picnic.
The date is August 10th. It will be
held in Los Altos, here in the Bay Area. The planning committee would
like
to know how many of you are
interested. If you would like to come, please contact Sherrlyn Lancaster
at
sherrlynl@sbcglobal.net.
We have 7 birthday Greys this month. They are Matti, Herbie
Hancock,
Autumn, Derby, KC, Phoebe and Amante. Happy Birthday to all of you.
We forgot to mention that we had two more winners at the GPA picnic,
May 4th.
Isaac (adopted by Deborah & Jim Antich at the picnic) and his "twin"
Nigel won
first place in the twin contest and the Antich's Daisy won second with
Ramses,
(San Dimas),who is going to his new "forever home" soon.
The weather has turned HOT. Let's not forget that our Greys feel the
heat just
like we do. Be sure to monitor how hot your house gets while you're
gone. A
circulating fan is a big help. Closed curtains and lots of water. Ice
cubes help
keep the water cool. Even leaving just the ice in a separate bowl to
melt, can
give your Grey a cool drink on a hot afternoon.
Happy Fathers Day to all our Grey Dads.
