Newsletter, 2002
A sparkly and happy July, Greyhound
friends!
With the sad end to June, I would like to dedicate this
newsletter to little June Bug. May she forever romp at the Rainbow
Bridge.
The Piper (Viper) Report. As some of you know, little
Piper developed chronic bloat and severe esophagytis. After surgery to
repair her stomach, she is now in the care of Jack and Dede Fishbaugh with lots
of help from Joan Scott. She has Dr. Robyn Herman nearby to monitor her
progress. Piper's expenses are unbelievable. She has to be fed
a certain kind of food at the cost of $10.00 per day. Even though we were
given a very generous discount for her surgery and after care, our reserves have
been drained. Piper is quite a little girl.
Even in her weakened condition, she still loves to play with
her stuffies and sleeps with her "arms" wrapped around them. She loves to
be hugged and is very playful. Unfortunately, when Jack took her
to Dr. Herman today, she has lost three more pounds and is now being
cared for by Dr. Herman to see what needs to be done. Anyone who
would like to donate to the Piper Fund is welcome to do so. Just
contact Ann Sanders at 408-749-0899 or sassae@att.net. I have attached a
picture of Piper with her stuffie so you can see how sweet she is.
Now that we are rescuing Greyhounds directly from the track,
this will be an on-going expense. When we do this, it costs us
approximately $200+ per dog to get them ready for adoption. The $250 we
receive is soon going to fall short in providing for these expenses. When
the dogs come off the track, like Piper, we have no idea what condition they are
in. Although conditions such as Piper's are rare, many come off the track
with injuries such as broken legs and hocks. The organization must pay to
have them fixed before adopting them out. Many of you have programs such
as "matching funds" where you work. As a non-profit organization, we
qualify for these funds. Any ideas that you may have to help us raise
money would be appreciated.
The following came today from our "parent" organization.
It was sent to all of you who have adopted and fallen in love with a
Greyhound:
THANK YOU, GREYHOUND ADOPTION CALIFORNIA-GPA/N.
CALIFORNIA
(from: the Caliente greyhounds)
Our greatest need, over many years, has
been to find more greyhound adoption groups who would focus their program on
those of us who grade off from the Agua Caliente Greyhound Park, in
Tijuana. Our biggest problem in finding these groups, has been
three- fold: the geography of the State of California, the
willingness and quality of the groups.... and It didn't help either, that we
were over the boarder in Mexico, and they were hundreds of miles
away.
We knew that GPA/CA-OC & GLA had been searching, for several
years, to find groups with the same high standards as theirs' and were aware
that some of us were destined for the Greyhound Connection in Reno, and GPA/So
Nevada in Las Vegas. We were happy to know that more of us were finding
forever homes.
All of a sudden, more and more of us were spending
less and less time in the Pet Kennel, and news got back that there was a new
group in northern California, now sponsored by our very own GPA. We heard
sometimes we were flown to them; sometimes we were driven to Button Willow and
ferried there, and sometimes people even came all the way down to Caliente to
pick up some of us, "fresh off the track". Now, 90 of us have found
forever homes and what was the best thing about going north; that those families
up there, just lovvvvvvvve us to pieces.
We hear that, pretty soon these
folks up north, will become a full chapter. They sure have the votes of
those of us who spend some time in the Pet Kennel. So, keep on working to
find homes for us all, you sure have made a big difference here! Bow
WOW!!!!!!!!
Cheers,
Joyce

Until one has known and loved a greyhound,
a part of one's soul remains unawakened.
To go with the above, we would like to welcome ten new adopters to the
organization. We also have two that are getting their second and third
dogs. Guess they're hooked.
Katy & Kurt Thieman of Sacramento adopted Remy (San
Dimas) Katy is determined that Remy will bond with her before Kurt steals
him away. Hummmmm. Maybe a second one for Kurt???
Teresa Soderlund and children, Blake and Taylor, of
Vacaville, adopted Martie (Astin Martin). All is going well and
they were featured in
an article in the THE REPORTER, the Vacaville newspaper, along with their
pictures. We do love the publicity.
Blane & Shelli Donald and children, Hunter and
Keaton, of Roseville, adopted Blackbird (Apollo). Apollo is a handsome
black and white boy who came in to the Vacaville fly-in on June 9th. The
event was filmed and shown on Fox 40 in Sacramento. Again, we do love the
publicity.
Andrew & Sandie Glasmacher and children Jacqueline
and Lukas of Elk Grove adopted Vinnie (Vinigaroon). Vinnie also came
in to the Nut Tree and was shown being introduced to his new family and
car.
Larry & Ronna Crews and children Hollis and Kendall
of Fresno adopted Callie (Isuzu). I think the following is
self-explanatory as to how she is fitting in: Callie has some latent
herding instincts -- she rounds up the girls' beanie babies and arranges them in
a circle, then lies in the circle's middle! Or she's a general rounding
her troops around her. Or she's protecting herself from Indian
attack... Just hope she doesn't rip those tags
off. Could be costly.
Jeannine & Arthur Grimm of Modesto adopted Mi-Nell (
Lexus). Knew there had to be a story about her new name. It seems
Jeannine was called "Her Nell" by her grandmother. She always liked the
name Nell and decided that Lexus would become "Mi (pronounced My)-Nell.
Hence the name, Mi-Nell. Very cute.
Diane Mancini of Pleasanton adopted Astro. Astro
was one of the Nor Cal 9 who was being fostered by Sylvia Olson. Sylvia
took him to the Pleasanton Show & Tell. Diane met him and fell in
love. A home visit was done that afternoon and he was adopted by
evening. See, love at first sight can work out.
Karen & Richard Whittington and son Adam of
Kelseyville adopted Monte (Amante). Another cute story that I'll let Karen
tell: Monte turned into a monster this morning; the alarm went
off at 6:00 and he was lying next to/on me. He jumped up, stood over me
singing some sort of dog operetta that sounded something like Scooby Doo, ends
it with a bark in my ear, jumps off the bed gets every toy (and that is a lot)
and proceeds to run around my room tossing toys in the air... So
much for going back to sleep. Karen now knows what a Roo sounds
like.
Bob & Joan Bibens of Modesto adopted Cheyenne
(Mercedes Benz). All is going well and they are taking her up to the hills
for a quiet Fourth. She will ride all the way behind Bob with her head on
his shoulder. Has to supervise I guess...
Missy & Jeff Hohle and children Morgan and Sami of
Vacaville adopted Max (Rolls Royce). Turns out Max and Shadow Sanders were
litter mates. Small world.
David & Julie Valadez of Manteca, adopted Cindy Lou
(Audi). Cindy is their second. Their first was Yogi. According
to Julie, Cindy is much more of a handful and has expensive tastes. She's
chewed one of Julie's Birkenstocks. Julie says she'll get the other one
for Christmas. Ouch.
Dan & Sarenna Deeble of Sacramento are
adopting their third Greyhound. His name is Elmer and his racing name was
Kid Limousine. Turns out, he is Sasha Denegri's half brother. Elmer
will be a sibling to Bondo and Paris. They are getting him on
Friday. Guess they are hooked on Greys. Also, congratulations on
becoming our newest placement reps.
Thank you to all of you for giving a retired racing Greyhound a wonderful
"forever home."
To all of you who responded to my e-mail about "tagging" your Greyhound,
thank you. One suggestion from Deborah Antich was that if you have your
cell phone with you all the time, put your cell's number on the tag. Also,
if you are out looking for your dog, they would be able to get to you
faster. Another suggestion was that if you go out of town and leave your
Greyhound with a friend or one of us, take a piece of tape and put a number
where you or the care giver can be reached on the tag. Both excellent
suggestions. Thank you.
A project that we have been working on is recording the tattoo numbers of
all of our Greyhounds on a spread sheet. If any of you have your
Greyhound's history, please send it to us. We need his/her race name,
sire, dame and state where they were born. It is a fun way to see if any
of our Greys are related. This is how we discovered that Shadow Sanders
and Max Hohle are brothers and JeT'aime Mazzei and Phoebe Brooks are
sisters. This means they are litter mates. The way we found this out
is that their left ear tattoos are the same and the only difference is in the
right ear. JeT'aime is 89A and Phoebe is 89B, Shadow is 49 F and Max is
49D. Casper Shofstahl is the son of Wigwam wag and Luthien Lopez/Roseman
is the daughter of Wigwam Hoss, another son of Wigwam Wag. Also, the late
Forgie Sanders was the son of Wigwam Bingie who was Casper's sister. That
means that Casper was Forgie's uncle. We hope to take all the information
you send us and bring it to the picnic on Aug. 10th so we can see if our Greys
are related. So send it ASAP.
Our next Show & Tell is the San Juan Bautista Craft Fair. The
dates are July 13th and 14th. We have openings for the 12 - 2:30
slots both days and the 2:30 - 5 both days. Let
me know if you want to help. Also, we can always use people to walk around
with brochures. Speaking of which, if any of you would like copies of the
fliers to take with you on walks and to the dog parks, let me know. I
have the flier set up in "Word" so it would be easy to send it to you.
July 21st is the Pooch Pow Wow at the Niles Community Park at 3rd and H
Sts. in the Niles District of Fremont. It's from 10 - 4. All are
welcome to attend. This is our first year so lets make it a GREYT turnout
with lots of Greys to impress them.
With the hot weather upon us, don't forget your Greys are hot
too. Many of them like a cool dip in a kiddie wading pool. Make sure
they have plenty of water. And remember, they are walking barefoot on the
hot asphalt. If you see your Grey hopping from one foot to the other, it
means the street or sidewalk is hot, hot, hot. Get them over to the grass
immediately.
We have just adopted out the last of the "Nor Cal 9" except for
Piper. We are going to need more fosters so we can do another trip to
Caliente. Please let me know if you are interested.
Be sure to mark your calendars for the first
annual Greyhound Adoption California/GPA/NC Picnic. It is Aug. 10th from
10 - 5. There will be a fee to be paid at the gate.
It is going to be in Los Altos. There will be prizes, food and games not
to mention all the fun of socializing with your Greys. Don't miss
it. Invitations will go out next week with all the information on
them.
Have a GREYT and, hopefully, cool July.
